Stones Over Sandpoint, Part 4 (Tuesday, Kuthona (XII) 24th 4707 AR-Saturday, Abadius (I) 4th 4708 AR)

The heroes caught up to the stone giants and killed them, saving the Scarnetti family members. These giants had loaded a lot of treasure into their wagon, including four woven silk tapestries worth 1,200 gp each; three chests of silver- and gold-inlaid tableware worth 1,000 gp in all; barrels of wine, brandy, and olive oil worth a total of 1,400 gp; and a teakwood desk inlaid with silver and gold worth 300 gp. All of this belonged to the Scarnetti family.

When the heroes bothered to search the teakwood desk, they found a hidden compartment that contained several letters addressed to Titus Scarnetti from local crime lord Jubrayl Vhiski that revealed not only that Titus hired Jubrayl to burn down several mills in the region (ensuring Scarnetti's own mill in town would gain more business), but also that Jubrayl had reversed the attack and was blackmailing the Scarnetti family for regular payments, lest he reveals to Sheriff Hemlock that Scarnetti paid one of his boys to light those fires. When the heroes presented this evidence to Sheriff Hemlock and Mayor Deverin, the Scarnetti family was all but ruined and the grateful town of Sandpoint scraped up a reward of 2,000 gp for the heroes for the resolution to the troubling arsons.

Intelligence

The heroes didn't manage to take any of the raiders prisoner. Spells like commune aided them in discovering information. Some of the questions they asked and the answers they got are summarized below:

Who is Mokmurian? Lord and leader.

Where is he based? Jorgenifist.

Where is Jorgenfist? Storval Stairs east.

What was the giants' business with the Old Light? Stones know, stones tell.

The heroes also found out that Sandpoint is still in danger, but not for the next few weeks, giving them time to craft magic items.

Catching Up in Sandpoint

During the downtime, Tsela talked himself out of the situation with Ven Vinder. The heroes are able to shop at the General Store again.

Although there was a sense of urgency in the air, the heroes took a couple of weeks to rest in town before they headed back out. After spending over a month away from town over in the Hook Mountain region, the heroes were eager to have some time to catch up with old friends and allies. In particular, since the heroes stopped the raid on Scarnetti Manor but discovered evidence that laid bare that family's secrets, the town all but demanded the heroes stick around, at least long enough to ensure that the Scarnettis faced justice. Mayor Deverin preferred to have them arrested, and asked the heroes to help Sheriff Hemlock escort the Scarnettis down to Magnimar to have them brought before that city's justices. The heroes were also in town during the Night of the Pale.

Undead Lords

For every type of undead, there exists an undead lord, a being of great power that commands the lesser of its kind. They are powerful creatures that inspire awe and fear in those they rule. Undead lords constantly project an aura that functions as a permanent desecrate spell. In addition, channeling energy is harder. Undead lords ignore damage from most weapons and natural attacks. Wounds heal immediately, or the weapon bounces off harmlessly. They can take normal damage from energy attacks (even nonmagical ones), spells, spell-like abilities, and supernatural abilities.
