Journey to Jorgenfist, Part 1 (Sunday, Abadius (I) 5th-12th, 4708 AR)

Image
The heroes made the journey on horseback from Sandpoint, up the Lost Coast Road, over to Ember Lake, then up to Galduria, Wolf's Ear, Ravenmoor, and finally the Storval Stairs. Up through Ravenmoor, this journey traveled along roads and tracks and trails, but beyond Ravenmoor it was open country. Ember Lake. Presumably fed by hot springs as well as the Lampblack and the Malgorian rivers, the waters of Ember Lake rise up warm from the rolling plains, and certain spots along the shore steam in colder months. The lake is also home to strange aquatic creatures that dart like fireflies in massive schools beneath the surface. Not quite fish, these tiny creatures called "charigs" resemble salamanders, their transparent skin phosphorescing in the clear waters. Although the creatures appear harmless, locals avoid eating them, claiming that on certain nights of the year the schools assemble in flickering patterns miles wide, moving with purpose and intelligence, as if creating visi

Stones Over Sandpoint, Part 4 (Tuesday, Kuthona (XII) 24th 4707 AR-Saturday, Abadius (I) 4th 4708 AR)

The heroes caught up to the stone giants and killed them, saving the Scarnetti family members. These giants had loaded a lot of treasure into their wagon, including four woven silk tapestries worth 1,200 gp each; three chests of silver- and gold-inlaid tableware worth 1,000 gp in all; barrels of wine, brandy, and olive oil worth a total of 1,400 gp; and a teakwood desk inlaid with silver and gold worth 300 gp. All of this belonged to the Scarnetti family. When the heroes bothered to search the teakwood desk, they found a hidden compartment that contained several letters addressed to Titus Scarnetti from local crime lord Jubrayl Vhiski that revealed not only that Titus hired Jubrayl to burn down several mills in the region (ensuring Scarnetti's own mill in town would gain more business), but also that Jubrayl had reversed the attack and was blackmailing the Scarnetti family for regular payments, lest he reveals to Sheriff Hemlock that Scarnetti paid one of his boys to light those fi

Dragons

Image
A dragon is a reptile-like creature, usually winged, with magical or unusual abilities. Dragons have darkvision and low-light vision. They are immune to magic sleep and paralysis effects. Dragons breathe, eat, and sleep. True dragons are divided into two broad categories: chromatic and metallic. Chromatic dragons are almost universally evil, seeking only to slake their endless lust for food, treasure, and bloodshed. Metallic dragons are generally good and often protect the lands under their care. Dragons can use a breath weapon. A dragon can use its breath weapon a few times a minute or so, even if it possesses more than one breath weapon. Breath weapons come in two shapes, lines and cones, whose areas vary with the dragon’s size. A dragon can use its breath weapon when it is grappling or being grappled. True dragons have improved darkvision and blindsense. They see better than humans in dim and normal light. True dragons have frightful presences. Many of a true dragon’

Stones Over Sandpoint, Part 3 (Tuesday, Kuthona (XII) 24th, 4707 AR)

The best way to prevent the red dragon from lighting devastating fires was to drive him off. His flight gave him superior mobility, but after Terakrinus used his war horn to summon aid, he swooped down to breathe fire on the heroes. When forced into melee, the red dragon used  true strike . Teraktinus and the pair of stone giants led by him fought to the death when challenged. Looting Scarnetti Manor Since the heroes were outside and had a view of Schooner Gulch Bluff, they noticed smoke rising from what could only be Scarnetti Manor. Three stone giants had swung wide so as to approach Sandpoint from the south - the approach resulted in their late arrival, but allowed them relative freedom in looting the manor houses and capturing nobles. Two of the giants pulled a large wagon between them that they intended to fill with prisoners and loot, and while they actually arrived at Scarnetti Manor earlier, the heroes were alerted to the attack only when smoke rising from a tipped-over wood-bu

Bears, Dire

Image
Dire bears are animals. An animal is a living, nonhuman creature, usually a vertebrate with no magical abilities and no innate capacity for language or culture. Animals have low-light vision. Animals breathe, eat, and sleep. Larger, more aggressive, and far more deadly than its lesser cousins, the dire bear (known to barbarian tribes variously as the cave bear or the short-faced bear) is a primeval menace indeed. This behemoth avoids more civilized reaches of the world, preferring to dwell in remote wilderness locations. A dire bear is a rare and terrifying sight – especially to those not used to normal bears. A dire bear can detect approaching enemies, sniff our hidden foes, and track by sense of smell. Dire bears can identify familiar odors just as humans do familiar sights. A dire bear can detect opponents by sense of smell. If the opponent is upwind, the range increases; if downwind, it drops. Strong scents, such as smoke or rotting garbage, can be detected at longer rang

The heroes had less than a day to prepare the town for an assault. Not enough time to orchestrate an evacuation of the town. March of the Giants The giants launched their assault on Sandpoint at dawn. On the morning of the raid, Shalelu and Bruthien's familiar were out and about at sunrise - they spotted several humanoid silhouettes standing atop the nearest tors of Ravenroost, lit by the rising sun. The size of these shapes left little doubt to Shalelu and Bruthien's familiar - the giants were there! Once the sun rose, the giants moved down quickly from Ravenroost and approached Sandpoint, using the woods and the cliffs alongside the Turandarok River to mask their approach. Since the heroes noticed the giants, they had about 10 minutes to prepare. The Raid Began A thunderous crack of stone against stone rang through the air - one of the giants throwing a boulder at Sandpoint's north wall. As Sandpoint woke and discovered itself under attack, screams and cries of terror min

Stones Over Sandpoint, Part 1 (Monday, Kuthona (XII) 23rd, 4707 AR)

After the heroes defeated the undead Lamatar, they returned with his body to Myriana. The nymph was overjoyed and cast reincarnate upon him. Normally, this spell would not work on Lamatar - not only had he been dead for longer than a week, but his body and soul had been tainted by undeath. Yet such was Myriana's love that her spirit infused the spell with power - although it caused her ghostly form to fade away, it enhanced the reincarnation such that it could restore Lamatar to life in a new body. Lamatar returned to life in a half-orc body, and though at first shamed by his failure to protect both Fort Rannick and his lover, he decided not to waste the new life she gave him. He became the new guardian of Whitewillow and did not return to civilization. Thus the heroes successfully put Myriana to rest. As she faded away forever, she picked Fen to gift with a lasting inspiration. As the heroes returned to Sandpoint, rumors of increased giant activity in the lowlands of Varisia were
