Local Heroes, Part 1 (Saturday, Rova 22nd 4707 AR)
The heroes dispatched the goblin pyros and the warchanter cast cure light wounds on herself after she was first wounded. She fought to the death.
After tangling with the first two groups of goblins, the heroes were wounded. All around them goblins were performing their antics (a goblin leapt off a roof in an attempt to land on a victim but missed and broke his neck, a goblin threw a lit torch at a fleeing mother only to have it land on another goblin and light his armor on fire), but they were allowed to catch their breaths.
Die, Dog, Die!
The final event at the goblin raid occurred after things at the festival itself had calmed somewhat. Here and there, the sounds of battle, clanging swords, calls of support by the town guard, and shrieking and singing goblins echoed through the streets, but at the festival itself, most of the citizens had fled. One or two goblins remained behind to scavenge food, and many more lay dead (along with a few unfortunate citizens). It was obvious that the fight had moved on, especially when the sound of a scream and a frantic barking came from the north.
Just east of the White Deer, near Sandpoint's north gate, a goblin commando mounted on a goblin dog had bravely attacked a noble and his hunting dog. The man in question is named Aldern Foxglove, a frightened noble citizen. Aldern cowered behind a rain barrel where he called for help, while his dog fought against the commando. As the heroes arrived on the scene, they were just in time to see the goblin commando kill the dog with his horsechopper. The dog crashed dying to the ground as the commando's goblin kin (who were themselves cowering nearby as the dog was handled) threw up a cheer and emerged from hiding.
The goblins were still distracted by their kill, and as they turned their attention to Foxglove, the heroes had the opportunity to attack with surprise.
The goblin commando used his superior mobility to remain out of melee so he could shoot at the heroes with his bow from dogback. The goblins and their dog fought to the death.
Once the goblins were dealt with, Aldern thanked the heroes profusely. He focused his attention on Thurden, who seemed to do the most damage in the fight, complimenting him on his skill at arms and bravery.
As he glanced about nervously looking for more goblins, he informed the heroes that he'll be in town for a few more days; he's staying at the Rusty Dragon to the south, and when they get a chance, he'd love to talk with them more and perhaps reward them properly for saving his life.
Victory!
By the time the heroes defeated the goblin commando and saved Aldern Foxglove from his fate, Sandpoint's overall battle against the goblins had been decided. Surviving goblins fled north in droves, in some cases preferring to leap to their certain deaths off the cliff at Junker's Edge rather than be captured. Several of the little menaces were caught alive.
In the Shadow of the goblin attack, Sandpoint was hardly interested in finishing up the Swallotail Festival - citizens retreated to their homes to hide and recover from the day's horrors, yet as they went, they took the time to thank the heroes for saving them.
The heroes decided to go for a drink and acquaint themselves with each other, and Urtrigor suggested the Fatman's Feedbag. If the Hagfish is Sandpoint's most popular tavern, Fatman's Feedbag is its most notorious. Bar fights are common, and Sheriff Hemlock typically has to come down here two or three times a week to sort them out when they grow particularly violent or loud. The majority of the clientele here are Varisian scoundrels or less-than-reputable sailors. This tavern is owned and operated by an enormous man named Gressel Tenniwar.
There Tsela tried to gather information on Aldern Foxglove. Over fifteen years ago, smoke from the Foxglove Manor on the Lost Coast was seen as far away as Sandpoint, and when townsfolk arrived to investigate, they found the servant's outbuilding burned to the ground and Traver Foxglove dead by his own hand. His wife's body was found burned and dashed against the rocks below. Cowering in a second-floor bedroom, though, the townsfolk discovered the Foxglove children. Aldern and his older sisters spent time in a Magnimar orphanage before they were claimed by Traver's second cousin and brought to the city of Korvosa to be raised.
Finally, at some point before the end of the day, the heroes were approached by Ameiko Kaijitsu. The innkeeper had been quite impressed with the heroes' actions, and offered them free rooms at the Rusty Dragon for a week as a way to thank them for helping to defeat the goblins. As they followed Ameiko back to her inn, they were met with Sheriff Hemlock, who congratulated Urtrigor for his actions earlier that day and asked for an introduction to the rest of the heroes.
