The heroes defeated the spider and healed the three prisoners. Last of the Black Arrows Three of the Order of the Black Arrows survived, and they were in bad shape. The only reason this group escaped the slaughter at Fort Rannick was because they were on a long-range patrol during the massacre. Their leader, a weathered old man whose worn face was as hard as leather, was named Jakardros. He and two of his men (Kaven and Vale) were all that remain; the others in the patrol have already been taken away for torture and death at the Grauls' hands. Jakardros Sovark Jakardros lost his eye to a close call with an ogre hook a decade ago. For many years he was second-in-command of Fort Rannick. After his patrol was delayed, they arrived back home to find the fort under Kreeg control. He lost a third of his unit in an attempt to retake the fort, and when they were forced to flee south into Kreegwood, the remainder were easy targets for the Grauls. Jakardros carried the loss of For...

Spider, Ogre

Image
Ogre spiders are vermin. Vermin include insects, arachnids, other arthropods, worms, and similar invertebrates. They are mindless and thus immune to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, morale effects, patterns, and phantasms). Vermin have darkvision. They breathe, eat, and sleep. Ogre spiders are brutal, terrifying hunters that build tangled webs capable of encasing entire trees. So-named because the arrangement of its eyes and mandibles gives it a face unnervingly similar to that of an ogre as much for their size, ogre spiders can fit into nooks and tunnels far more narrow than one might expect. An ogre spider is sensitive to vibrations in the ground and can automatically pinpoint the location of anything that is in contact with the ground. An ogre spider can poison those it attacks. Poisons can be removed through neutralize poison and similar effects. Ogre spiders can use webs to support themselves and up to one additional creature of ...

In the Hook's Shadow, Part 4 (Sunday, Kuthona (XII) 1st, 4707 AR)

The ogrekin had a ratty, stained blanket tucked into the back of his belt. Five patches bearing the Black Arrow crest were sewn into the blanket - in some cases, the patches were bloodstained. Shalelu recognized the patches. The firepelt, which survived the battle, frantically tried to communicate with the heroes. The heroes deduced that the firepelt was very concerned about someone or something and wanted them to follow him. The firepelt nibbled at their cloaks, tugging them toward a poorly maintained trail that led deeper into Kreegwood. Following it for a half-mile led to a homestead. The Farm This is where the heroes got their first taste of ogrish hillbilly horror. The trail led to a sickly farm in a clearing in the forest. The woods around this land were decorated with several hanging cornhusk-and-leather humanoid-shaped fetishes meant to ward off intruders - an investigation of any of these fetishes revealed they were stuffed with what appeared to be a mix of dirt and h...

Ogrekin

Image
Ogrekins are giants. A giant is a humanoid creature of great strength, usually of at least Large size. Giants have low-light vision. The result of an unfortunate union between an ogre and a humanoid, the ogrekin (or half-ogre) is cursed with horrific malformations due to its tragic ancestry. Shunned by both parents, ogrekin tend to form unstable clans of their own, often resorting to inbreeding to sustain the collective. While good-natured ogrekin are not entirely unheard of, they are far and few between. Ogrekin have both beneficial and disadvantageous deformities.

Dog, Riding

Image
Riding dogs s are animals. An animal is a living, nonhuman creature, usually a vertebrate with no magical abilities and no innate capacity for language or culture. Animals have low-light vision. Animals breathe, eat, and sleep. Larger dogs (known to Small races like halflings and gnomes as riding dogs) include hardier breeds such as huskies, mastiffs, and wolfhouds. A riding dog can fight while carrying a rider, but the rider cannot also attack unless he is a skilled rider. Riding dogs can detect approaching enemies, sniff out hidden foes, and track by sense of smell. Riding dogs can identify familiar odors just as humans do familiar sights. Riding dogs can detect opponents by sense of smell. If the opponent is upwind, the range increases; if downwind, it drops. Strong scents, such as smoke or rotting garbage, can be detected at longer range. Overpowering scents, such as skunk musk or troglodyte stench, can be detected at even longer range. When a rid...

The heroes continued their journey, encountering a band of goblins and a group of Varisian wanderers, before finally reaching Turtleback Ferry. Turtleback Ferry There wasn't much to do in Turtleback Ferry except ask around for news. Turtleback Ferry is a small township perched on the rain-drenched north shore of Claybottom Lake. Three distinctive ferries crafted from the shells of giant turtles make Turtleback Ferry the central trading town for the region. Nearly 80 miles form Ilsurian, the next town of similar size, Turtleback Ferry has nominally been under Magnimarian rule for 45 years, an arrangement the settlement agreed to in return for protection from the region's ogres and ogrekin. Turtleback Ferry remains independent in many ways, for its remote location ensures that official visits form Magnimar are few and far between. Turtleback Ferry's current mayor is an aged cleric of Erastil named Maelin Shreed, who manages the village church as both a safe haven f...
