Reefclaw
Reefclaws are aquatic aberrations.
An aberration has a bizarre anatomy, strange abilities, an
alien mindset, or any combination of the three.
Abberations have darkvision.
Aberrations breathe, eat, and sleep.
Aquatic creatures are always good swimmers. An aquatic
creature can breathe water. It cannot breathe air unless it is amphibious.
Reefclaws are vicious predators. They possess greater
intelligence than animals, but rely mainly on their strength and instincts to
survive. They hunt fish, giant crabs, dolphins, and even land-dwelling creatures
that come within a hundred paces of the water.
Reefclaws have low-light vision.
Reefclaws remain conscious and can continue fighting even
when dying. They are still staggered and die from blood loss.
In populated areas, reefclaws prey on beachcombers, divers,
and fishermen, sometimes abandoning their solitary nature and coordinating
attacks with other reefclaws. The creatures must be wary, however, because in
some regions, these abominations find their way to the dinner plate. Brave
fishermen troll bays and coastlines infested with reefclaws, baiting the
creatures with fresh meat and then harvesting their powerful claws with axes.
Reefclaws ignore some cold damage each time they take damage
of that kind.
If a reefclaw hits with its claws, it deals normal damage
and attempts to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of
opportunity. A reefclaw can use this ability on a target of any size. The
creature has the option to conduct the grapple normally, or simply use its claw
to hold the opponent. If it chooses to do the latter, it does not gain the
grappled condition itself. Each successful grapple check it makes during
successive rounds automatically deals damage from its claws.
Reefclaws cannot speak, but the creatures understand the
languages used by humanoids near their hunting grounds. They use this knowledge
in order to avoid fishermen and coordinate attacks. Reefclaws keep no treasure,
instead savoring the taste of flesh and crunch of bone and shell as much as a
miser covets his gold.
A reefclaw can poison those it attacks. Poisons can be
removed through neutralize poison and
similar effects.
When a reefclaw is killed, its body spasms horrifically.
Immediately upon dying, the reefclaw makes a full attack against a creature it
threatens.
A typical reefclaw reaches approximately 3-1/2 feet long at
adulthood and weighs 70 pounds. Females gather to breed once every 2 to 3
years, engaging in a predatory hunt for a male and leaving him shredded to
pieces.
A reefclaw can crush an opponent, dealing bludgeoning
damage, when it makes a successful grapple check (in addition to any other
effects caused by a successful check, including additional damage).
Reefcalws are aquatic, but they can survive indefinitely on
land.
