Scarred by the depravity of ancient wizards and reclaimed by a wilderness of beasts and savages, only in the past few hundred years have the steps of civilized men again trod the wondrous and mysterious lands of Varisia.

Welcome to Varisia! Before you set out on your adventure, there are some things you should know that will aid you on your journey. In the "background" blog label, you'll find helpful tips on designing your character, a selection of traits to help your character feel like a part of the world and the events of the campaign, and an overview of the lands your character will be visiting.

How to Use the "Background" Label

On the left-hand side of the blog you will find a drop-down menu of the labels used. The "background" label will reveal much of the history and background of Varisia and will aid players in the creation of characters native to the region. All of the information presented herein is considered common knowledge, especially to characters who call Varisia home - players are encouraged to create characters with ties to this varied land.

To aid in that task, this blog label will be organized to facilitate character creation, providing you with details about races in the area, character tips, deities commonly worshiped, campaign traits, and equipment created and utilized by natives. The latter sections will detail the lands of Varisia, with a special focus on Sandpoint, the town in which the campaign will start. While any character, new or old, can take part in the campaign, those created and equipped using the "background" label are likely to have an advantage as the events of the campaign unfold.

As the campaign will begin in the coastal town of Sandpoint, characters should consider being local to that community or having a reason for visiting the area. If you choose to create a character from beyond Varisia's borders, work with me to establish a reason for being in Sandpoint.

Undead Lords

For every type of undead, there exists an undead lord, a being of great power that commands the lesser of its kind. They are powerful creatures that inspire awe and fear in those they rule. Undead lords constantly project an aura that functions as a permanent desecrate spell. In addition, channeling energy is harder. Undead lords ignore damage from most weapons and natural attacks. Wounds heal immediately, or the weapon bounces off harmlessly. They can take normal damage from energy attacks (even nonmagical ones), spells, spell-like abilities, and supernatural abilities. Magic weapons can damage undead lords normally. Undead lords are extremely dangerous opponents. They are stronger, tougher, and more intelligent than the ones they command. Riding dogs s are animals. An animal is a living, nonhuman creature, usually a vertebrate with no magical abilities and no innate capacity for language or culture. Animals have low-light vision. Animals breathe, eat, and sleep. Larger dogs (known to Small races like halflings and gnomes as riding dogs) include hardier breeds such as huskies, mastiffs, and wolfhouds. A riding dog can fight while carrying a rider, but the rider cannot also attack unless he is a skilled rider. Riding dogs can detect approaching enemies, sniff out hidden foes, and track by sense of smell. Riding dogs can identify familiar odors just as humans do familiar sights.
