Rat, Dire

Image
Dire rats are animals. An animal is a living, nonhuman creature, usually a vertebrate with no magical abilities and no innate capacity for language or culture. Animals have low-light vision. Animals breathe, eat, and sleep. Dire rats grow up to 2 feet long and weigh up to 25 pounds. They are common menaces in dungeons and city sewers alike. Dire rats may infect those they bite with filth fever. Filth fever can be removed through remove disease and similar effects. Dire rats can detect approaching enemies, sniff out hidden foes, and track by sense of smell. They can identify familiar odors just as humans do familiar sights. Tracking by scent ignores the effects of surface conditions and poor visibility.

In the Hook's Shadow, Part 7 (Sunday-Monday, Kuthona (XII) 1st-2nd, 4707 AR)

The heroes finally tracked down Kaven at Turtleback Ferry, where he admitted running away because he did not want to fight anymore. He also admitted that his Sihedron tattoo was given to him by Lady Lucrecia on Paradise . In the end, the heroes let Kaven go, but not before learning all they could about Paradise and Lady Lucrecia. Lucrecia, an interpreneur, had arrived in Turtleback Ferry several years ago; she bought an old barge there and refurbished it as a floating gambling hall. She dubbed the barge Paradise , and offered any and all patrons myriad opportunities to enjoy themselves in her games of chance. Favored guests were given small tattoos to show on following visits to receive discounts off the entrance fee and other, less seemly benefits. Of course, this tattoo was none other than the Sihedron Rune. Many were willing to be marked in order to enjoy Paradise 's "members-only" benefits, and even the steadfast Black Arrows of Fort Rannick weren't immune

Tendriculoses

Tendriculoses are plants. Plants are vegetable creatures. Regular plants, such as one finds growing in gardens and fields, are not creatures, but objects, even though they are alive. They have low-light vision. Plants are immune to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, morale effects, patterns, and phantasms). They are immune to paralysis, poison, polymorph, sleep effects, and stunning. Plants breathe and eat, but do not sleep. A tendriculos is a creature brought into being through a corruption of nature, often where foul magic has seeped into the environs for many years, or where the boundaries between the Material Plane and the mysterious realm of the fey have worn thin. Tales and myths speak of arcane manipulation from other planes, while others speak of a tendriculos as being the manifestation of an angered spirit of nature. A voracious carnivore, the tendriculos is an active hunter when it needs to be but it prefers to rely on ambush tact

In the Hook's Shadow, Part 6 (Sunday, Kuthona (XII) 1st, 4707 AR)

The heroes finally defeated the ogrekin mage, but not before she activated a trap. Jakardros, Kibb, Thurden and Vale were on top of the pit. Thurden and Vale fell through a hole in the floor in a chute lined with sharpened stakes coated in venom. Tendriculos Pit. This damp, steamy room reeked of rotting vegetable matter. Pools of mud and stagnant water dotted the mossy floor, and the walls were caked with thick swaths of puffy fungus and mold. This mossy, vine-covered section of the basement was home to a massive carnivorous plant - a tendriculos. It attacked the heroes when they fell through the hole above, but they managed to kill it. While the heroes battled the tendriculos, Kaven took the chance to escape towards Turtleback Ferry. The heroes followed his tracks, but lost him when he entered the lake right before town. Although neither of Kaven's fellow Black Arrows suspected him of being a traitor, they revealed that the sihedron tattoo he bore was not as old a
